Building a house costs even more today as the prices of all building materials have increased gradually over a year. The lack of price control to shortages in exporting countries, freight and the exchange rate are the causes for this rise in material costs for construction in Mauritius.
The
construction price index for February and March 2021 is 108.5. This index,
which was at 105.2 in April 2020, has therefore maintained its upward trend,
indicates Statistics Mauritius. Specifically, in February, the index rose 0.6%
due to the increase in the prices of cement by 0.2%, iron bars by 7.7%,
carpentry by 0, 3%, sanitary and electrical installations by 1.0%. However, in
March it remained unchanged. No change in the index has been recorded, possibly
due to the second lockdown since March 10.
At the start of the year, the construction price index, which was 106.9 at the end of December 2020, climbed 0.9% in January 2021, not only with the increase in the cost of labor by 1, 7%, prices of iron bars by 8.2%, sanitary and electrical installations by 1.0%, but also tiling and granite by 0.3%.
